HISTORY OF LETTERMAN JACKETS
The letterman / varsity jacket is an American cultural icon. Originating in 1865 at Harvard University, the jackets were first awarded exclusively to the institution’s elite athletes. Varsity jackets have since become available to high school and college students across America, and are worn proudly as a mark of achievement for participation in sports such as baseball, American football, and basketball.
Due to global interest in American culture and fashion, in recent years the letterman jacket and other varsity garments have become popular internationally, and are now worn the world over by people from all walks of life.
The term ‘letterman’ is derived from the practice of awarding students an embroidered letter (usually their college or university’s initials) once they have achieved a certain level of sporting success, which is then to be sewn onto an item of clothing. The letterman jacket itself subsequently became the standard garment onto which the letter would be attached.
While the letterman jacket was originally intended for only the finest athletes at America’s top universities, over the years the criteria for being awarded a varsity jacket has become less and less stringent, to the point that in recent years it has become commonplace for even non-athletes to wear them. This, however, has not meant that the pride of wearing one’s personal letterman jacket has been diminished; high schools, colleges, and universities still award unique varsity jackets to their highest-achieving students, which are easily distinguishable from the more common letterman jackets which are purely fashion items.
